I heard this Version decades ago on a Bootleg LP, and it sent shivers down my spine. And the officially released version was something of a disappointment for me, too. Taste varies, of course, but nothing gave me goosebumps like that no-nonsense deadpan-version!

This is a very careful, measured, and in my opinion nearly unemotional take compared to others, including the version released as part of The Promise outtakes set. This strikes me as what some of the electric Nebraska takes must have sounded like: everything there but the feeling present in most other takes. I’m with Bruce, I wouldn’t be in a hurry to release this one either, except as part of a more complete outtakes set with multiple takes a la Dylan’s new bootleg series offering..
