Review:

This was a band I was looking forward to like no other. I don’t remember getting this excited about NIN, Tool, or U2 (though when Billy Joe Armstrong from Green Day came on stage to sing “The Saints are Coming” in Aloha Stadium was pretty close). It seems weird, but PUSA was one of those bands that really hit a personal high-school cord with me. They were guys that were trying to sound tough or be cool, they just seemed like they were having a lot of fun writing and playing about anything, were from Seattle just like me and my friends, and we were all pretty sure that “Peaches” meant something dirty. As you can guess, I’m heavily biased in their favor for the rest of this review.

So, here’s where my day job in radio really pays off. We have an in-studio venue/lounge for bands to play that’s called simply The Hall and the Presidents were scheduled to perform there for a crowd of maybe 40 people before their show. The Hall performances are usually acoustic and these guys pulled it off by adopting a kind of rock/bluegrass sound that translated very well. The best part of this is that you can call bullshit on me by seeing the performance for yourself and making your own call by going to www.thehall.tv and looking through their past performances.

Review:

Now a lot of people might scoff at this band so associated with the 90’s making an attempt at a comeback, but I hope that nostalgia will be enough to give their new Album “These are the Good Times, People” a chance. It’s a lot like their first album, but with a natural progression that doesn’t make it sound dated. “Mixed Up S.O.B.” and “Bad Times” are the stand outs for me. As an added bonus, check out their video for “Mixed Up S.O.B.” It’s pretty awesome and directed by “Weird Al” Yankovic.

The actual concert at Pipeline Cafe had fewer people there than a fan like me was hoping for, but those that showed were die-hard-sing-along types that the band took full advantage of. Here’s where PUSA really shines: they know how to work a crowd and they find ways of sounding even better live than on some of their studio-produced tracks. Quickly, here’s the setlist:

Probably the best part of the show came with their cover of the classic “Shout” in the middle of “Kick Out the Jams.” During the “little bit softer now” part, people were of course singing along and as Chris Ballew got on his knees to sing, he asked the audience to do the same. EVERYONE did. Several hundred people on their knees in Pipeline Cafe singing along with PUSA’s cover of “Shout.” It was the first time I’d seen that level of interaction (aside from an arena show with everyone screaming) and it just fit the mood perfectly.

So the band lived up to my perception of being a lot of fun and please please don’t sell this band short as being “just another 90’s” band. There’s nothing wrong with that, especially when they improve.

Review:

Whenever you're feeling down put on one of The Presidents of the USA's albums. It's a definite upper. Their music is full of positive energy and so are their shows. So it's a no brainer when they visit my town to go see them.

So on a Friday night it was time to celebrate the weekend with this feel good band. And they got the party started right from the start. Singer Chris Ballew was cracking jokes in between songs to add to the good vibe. Even when people in the crowd were tossing parts of plush animals onto the stage (the support act of the night was called "Stuffed Animal") he joked about it and even added an additional verse to the song "Kitty" singing about poor old teddy without arms and legs. They told the crew to take it easy on the stage divers and let them take their dive into the crowd. This is a good example of what a PUSA gig is all about.

But let's not forget the music. Of course they were playing their big hits like "Kitty", "Peaches", "Lump" and "We're Not Gonna Make It" but also some more rare songs and songs of their latest album "These Are The Good Times People". They all blend in together nicely making a good set that never falls short. It's also nice to see that all you need is a drum player (Jason Finn), guitar player (Andrew McKeag) and bass player (Ballew) to lay down a solid grooving sound. Maybe the trio setup is one of their strengths: it leaves enough room for everyone to go full force. And full force ahead it is almost for the whole show. Before you know it they have finished their encore to leave everyone in very good spirits. What else can you ask from a band? - Ronald

Our musical guests will be:
CHRIS BALLEW, formerly of the Presidents of the United States of America, who has been making great kids' music of late, under the very swanky moniker Caspar Babypants. (He'll also be performing grownup songs, tho his kid songs work for young and old alike.)
THE OLD BELIEVERS, the warm and breezy folk duo of Nelson Kempf and Keeley Boyle who will be appearing with Laura Viers and Cataldo in California in July...but we get them first!

Performers LOREN HOSKINS (Hoskins and Breen, The 3rd Floor) and SHELLEY MCLENDON (The Liberators, Eastland Academy) will be joining us for some onstage shenanigans. We're also very much enjoying having Mr. Hoskins as a guest writer on the show this month. He is, what they refer to in the comedy biz as, "Extremely effing funny."
And as always, the comic stylings of Faces for Radio Theater, house band Ralph Huntley and the Mutton Chops and host Courtenay Hameister.

Multi-platinum recording artist The Presidents of the United States of America will take the Red Cat Summer Stage on the 4th of July, during the Camping World Grand Prix at The Glen. The high-energy concert is included with the price of weekend admission to the IndyCar Series race at Watkins Glen International, July 3-5. Fans looking to attend the concert only have the option to buy a Sunday admission ticket. The track will allow access to Sunday ticket holders after 5 pm on Saturday, July 4th.

Prior to one of the largest fireworks displays in western New York, fans will need to get ready for one of the biggest names to ever appear on the Red Cat Summer Stage, sponsored by Hazlitt 1852 Vineyards and Winery. The Presidents of the United States of America debuted their new release titled "Movin In" on NPR's Weekend America in January. The song was also played in concert during the Presidential Inauguration celebration in Washington, D.C. on January 20th. It can be downloaded at www.presidentsrock.com.

"We continue to focus on the fans' experience which includes both on and off the track entertainment throughout the weekend," stated Craig Rust, president of Watkins Glen International. "Having IndyCar Series qualifying, followed by a concert and the largest 4th of July fireworks display - not to mention our annual NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Coke Zero 400 viewing party later that night live from Daytona - makes this the best 4th of July party in Upstate NY."

Most of the cabins have an interactive, hands-on component, allowing attendees to enter and interact with the artists' work. This year’s Museum of Sound artists will include: Chris Ballew (on Sunday), Hollow Earth Radio, Gust Burns, Kristin Tollefson, Ruthie Tomlinson, Craig Snyder and NC Youth Art Program students..

The festival includes lots of interactive and hands-on activities such as EcoRhythm Instrument Building, EcoArt Mask Making, Printmaking and Naturalist activities in the Interactive Arts/Family-Kids area. Mom and Dad might recognize Chris Ballew as lead singer of Seattle rockers The Presidents of the United States of America, but now he’s got a gig for the kids, too: Caspar Babypants. Ballew realizes that parents of very young children might need a tiny bit of help every now and then, so his goal as Caspar is to offer “real organic musical relief” with “simple sing-along music for baby brains and parent ears.” With titles like “Little Broken Truck” and “Bug in the Cuff” Caspar’s songs are just as clever as The Presidents’—and just as catchy, no matter how old you are. , Tickets are free for kids 12 and under/$5 for adults. No children without adults, no adults without children. Tickets are required for children and adults and are available at www.brownpapertickets.com or 800/838-3006. LEARN MORE: http://babypantsmusic.com Caspar on MySpace watch Caspar and friends perform "Little Broken Truck" at Town Hall. Saturday, September 19, 2009, 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM. Reviews/Notes:

"I had a great time at the music-community candidate fundraiser last week at the Crocodile. The Maldives rocked, and I had the opportunity to join The Presidents of the United States of America onstage. We did a couple of surf tunes, and I played bass on "Peaches." We also continued a time-honored ritual at the Crocodile--closing the bar!" - Krist Novoselic
