Caspar Babypants Press: Ridge Romp back with fun for kids and parents The annual Ridge Romp children’s entertainment series starts up again at the Phinney Center on Oct. 3 with an almost-monthly offering of various fun events, from concerts to puppet shows. The cost is $3 per person (child or adult). PNA members also can buy family passes at the first show for $35 for the whole season (six shows). The first three shows of the season are set. More will be announced soon. All shows start at 10:30 a.m. in the PNA Community Hall (in the brick building); doors open at 10 a.m. The schedule so far is: Sat., Oct. 3: The Not-Its! Sat., Nov. 28: Alleyoop Sat., Jan. 2, 2010: Caspar Babypants (a.k.a. Chris Ballew of Presidents of the United States of America) Ridge Romp is a volunteer effort, with all proceeds going back into hiring the performers. They’re looking for some more volunteers, so email the Ridge Romp folks if you want to help. As a side note, Ballew offered up a personal song to the highest bidder at last May’s PNA Auction. Joyce Lem was thrilled to win, and told me Ballew sent her an autographed CD of the song a month later after one phone call and numerous emails to discuss what the song should be about. Seattle’s enduring Presidents of the United States of America has even made a living of writing hooky rockers about everything from canned fruit to torn jackets. He candidly confessed his reservations about making a second record too soon ("We really made a good EP into a record. There was a lot of fluff on the second record."), told the story behind "Peaches" (there was this girl...), laughed about run-ins with MC5 when Presidents covered "Kick Out the Jams," and spliced into songs with stories about the band, the writing, his family and anything else he could fit in between chords. Get thee to the Tractor tonight for a very, very special night, as everyone sings "It's Your Birthday" to two Seattle pop legendaries - Lulu and Kurt of the Fastbacks. The evening starts off promptly at 8:30 with a heavy dose of Seattle royalty- the Young Fresh Fellows. Then, as if that wasn't enough, a bunch of other, a bunch of Seattle pop royalty, like PUSA, the Tripwires, Thee Sgt. Major III, and tons more will join the stage to sing a bunch of Fastbacks covers. And then, Seattle's favorite Fastbacks cover band, The K-Streets (hint - it's basically just the Fastbacks) will perform all the hits and classics. To top it all off, the night is only $5. I can't possibly think of a better way to spend a fiver. In honor of this wonderfulness, we at TIG decided to re-run this beautiful piece of Fastbacks nerdery, origially posted by a Dear Mr. Oswald a few months ago for the last K-Streets show at the Sunset. Ah, the K-Streets... I last saw them in the winter, and I guess now is the time to see them in the summer - a banner year, I know! No information is available about them, but if you were to ask me what it's like and what to expect, I'd say parts of their songs sometimes sound like they were taken out of the charts, and you will maybe think "is it familiar?"... Let me just say that sitting on your hands on the couch (even in someone's else's room) would really be a waste of time and so wrong, wrong, wrong. The Young Fresh Fellows open the show, but I'm always full of impatience, and if I have to wait it out for one more hour, that would be everything I don't need! I just ask that if you find your way to the front fast enough, save room for me. Setlist The Big Spin is a fundraiser for Seattle Children’s Hospital Caspar Babypantswith Recess Monkey, The Not Its The Mitzvah Mama Guild held The Big Spin, a Hanukkah celebration, at the Museum of History and Industry in Seattle Dec. 12. Proceeds of $12,000 benefited uncompensated care. Described by the guild as “a party to end all parties for the Jewish families of Greater Seattle,” the event attracted nearly 400 attendees. It featured food, activities for kids and a chance to win prizes by spinning the largest dreidel in the Pacific Northwest. Prizes included ballet tickets, gift cards and lodging at the Hotel Monaco. The afternoon culminated in a concert featuring Caspar Babypants, The Not-Its! and Recess Monkey. |
